Dental Examination Check-Up
Regular dental examinations allow your dentist to check for dental decay, gum problems, failing restorations, tooth wear problems and signs of head and neck cancer. The interval between examinations is usually six months (one year if you have no natural teeth) this allows us to monitor and identify changes to your oral health.
Your dentist will check if there have been any changes to your medical history- it is important you tell your dentist of any changes to your health or medications or if there is a chance you could be pregnant as this may impact the investigations and treatment options you dentist can provide.
Your dentist will discuss your home care routine (toothbrushing and flossing/use of interdental brushes) and if you smoke or drink alcohol (they are not being nosey - these are important risk factors in the development of mouth cancer and gum disease)
A routine dental examination involves checking the lymph nodes, major salivary glands and jaw joints outside your mouth, then a thorough systematic assessment of the soft tissues inside your mouth followed by an assessment of your teeth and gums.
Periodically (depending on problems identified or your risk of decay) your dentist will offer you dental x rays- these allow us to see between and below the surface of your teeth for decay and failing restorations as well as many other dental problems that can be identified.
After your examination your dentist will discuss their findings and offer tailored advice, treatment options and agree a plan that you are happy with. We offer Dental examinations through the NHS or privately- if you choose to have your examination privately we are able to spend more time with you allowing you to fully benefit from our holistic approach to dental care.
